iGaming license

Permission from a gambling regulator to offer casino or betting services in specific markets. It tells an affiliate whether a brand can be promoted legally in a GEO, and who answers when something goes wrong.

Also called: gambling license, gaming license, online casino license, gaming licence.

Licenses come in 2 broad kinds. Market licenses, issued by the UK Gambling Commission or regulators in Sweden, Ontario or US states, cover players in that market only. Licenses from hubs like Malta, the Isle of Man or Curaçao are used to serve players in many countries, including ones where the brand holds no local permission. A logo in the footer proves nothing: look the license number up in the regulator's public register.

The license also sets your obligations. In Great Britain the Gambling Commission's code makes licensees responsible for the third parties they contract with, affiliates included: contracts must bind them to the same rules and allow prompt termination if an affiliate breaches advertising codes. That is why UK-facing programs audit your pages. Some US states go further and require the affiliate itself to register or hold a license, depending on how it is paid.

Ask the manager which license covers each GEO you plan to run. Promoting a brand where it isn't licensed can expose you, not only the operator: Great Britain's Gambling Act makes advertising unlawful gambling a criminal offense. If the manager can't name the license for a GEO, treat that GEO as off-limits.
