Glossary
Responsible gambling
The rules and tools that limit gambling harm: deposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion. In regulated GEOs they also govern advertising, so an affiliate's ads and pages must comply or put the operator's license at risk.
Also called: safer gambling, responsible gaming, RG, player protection.
On the player side, regulated operators offer deposit and loss limits, session reminders, cooling-off periods and self-exclusion, often linked to a national register. In Great Britain online operators have had to join GAMSTOP since March 2020, so one request excludes a player from all of them. Operators must stop marketing to self-excluded people, and as their contracted third party, so must you.
On the advertising side, rules differ by jurisdiction, so one creative rarely fits every GEO. Common requirements: an age marker (18+ or 21+ depending on the market), no appeal to minors, no framing gambling as a way out of money problems or a route to success, and safer gambling messages or a helpline where the local code demands it. Italy goes further and broadly bans gambling advertising.
The common mistake is treating the safer gambling line as decoration, cropped from a banner to save space or lost in translation. In Great Britain the operator answers for your content, and its contract with you must allow prompt termination for advertising breaches. Ask the program for its compliance guidelines per GEO.
